On July 22, 2026, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee has included the National Plan for Epilepsy Act (S. 494) in its markup. The HELP Committee will be considering a “Manager’s Amendment” which is essentially a modified version of the original bill. Government relations advisors collaborated with HELP Committee staff and the bill sponsors to incorporate a few changes to ensure amendment maintains the bill’s intent and approach – to improve federal coordination on epilepsy, and to involve the epilepsy community in the development and execution of those efforts.
This is an incredible and pivotal step in advancing the bill! More than 14,000 distinct bills have been introduced in the 119th Congress and a very small percentage make it this far. This progress is a huge testament to 150 epilepsy organizations unifying behind the bill and community advocates across the country holding meetings and getting their members of Congress to cosponsor it. THANK YOU for your advocacy!!
What Happens Next?
Watch the HELP Committee’s markup tomorrow, Wednesday, July 22 starting at 10:00am ET here (Timing of S. 494 is uncertain with multiple bills on the docket).
Read the Managers Amendment here.
Next up - focus will be on a similar process in the House; and ultimately legislation would still need to be considered by the full Senate and the House.
